San Diego, California. Apartment rental prices in San Diego have climbed twenty-four percent since last year.
Now you can rent a one bedroom apartment for an average of two thousand two hundred dollars a month.
So when a wild apartment rental ad appeared on Craigslist, Reddit users were outraged. The ad offers a “discounted room rental” near Lemon Grove for a fulltime and unpaid nanny.
In turn, the future tenant will not only pay rent, but also have to clean the whole house and take care of the seven-year-old child of its landlord.
The working hours are crazy too. The tenant/nanny will be ‘on the clock’ from three o’clock in the afternoon until almost three o’clock in the morning every weekday – and without any pay.
How would the tenant even manage to earn an extra six hundred dollars a month after working those hours, let alone pay his personal and child care bills?
“What a bargain! You can pay someone six hundred dollars a month to work full time! Rent is high in San Diego, so might as well prey on the desperate,” wrote the original Reddit user named ChooseBeggars.
The ad also explicitly encourages “single moms” to apply, further angering the Reddit community.
“I’m sure there will be a desperate young single mother ready to accept this. That’s what bothers me the most about this post. By saying ‘single moms are fine’ they know who they are trying to target,” one user commented.
